Ecological
OYSTER recognises the importance of responsible environmental management.
All buildings designed and constructed by OYSTER are fabricated from UK grown timber and have exceptionally high levels of insulation and air tightness. The advanced closed panel wall sections and cassette floor design which are used in the construction ensures that all OYSTERS exceed the latest energy-saving regulations in the UK.
OYSTER first started engaging with The Carbon Trust to review the design of the early buildings. Since then The Carbon Trust has continued to be involved with the evolution of the design. Their analysis of the specification and fabrication techniques has proved to be invaluable and has greatly assisted OYSTER'S designers to further refine the operational performance of the buildings.
Renewable enegry systems are a great way to reduce running costs and have a positive impact on the environment. Together with our specialist supplier partner, we are able to offer national coverage and most importantly, national service and maintenance agreements for all of our systems installed by OYSTER.
As there is an almost endless range of OYSTERS, so there is with renewable engery systems.
OYSTER offers a bespoke consultancy service which will enable you to fully understand the financial implications, both capital and operational when selecting any renewable heating and power system.
Specific equipment within our range will also attract Enhanced Capital Allowances which can impact significantly on any final selection decison.
Included in the range of systems offered by OYSTER are:
What is 'Eco' construction?
"Eco-friendly, or ecological, construction is building a structure that is beneficial or non-harmful to the environment, and resource efficient. Otherwise known as green building, this type of construction is efficient in its use of local and renewable materials, and in the energy required to build it, and the energy generated while being within it.

FAQs
Can I change the internal room layout?
Yes. As there are no internal load bearing walls we can work to your designs for any internal layouts.
Is the provision of services and foundations included in the price?
No. As these will vary from site to site OYSTER can if required, quote for these separately. Alternatively, you may wish to use our drawings and your own local contractors. We would suggest that you contact us for more specific information.
What type of foundations are required?
A typical installation of an OYSTER will require either a concrete strip foundation with block work or a concrete slab. In some cases and planning/site dependent, low impact, above ground concrete pads can used. An engineer’'s report would be required prior to any recommendations. Please contact us for more information.
What guarantee comes with an OYSTER?
In partnership with Allianz, a 10 year warranty is provided for each building. Each OYSTER has an expected design life of at least 60 years. Appliances and specific components of individuallly designed buldings will carry separate warrantries ie windows, roofing materials, bathroom fitments.
Where can I see an OYSTER?
An OL40 is available for viewing, by appointment at our show site near Loch Lomond, Scotland.
Does an OYSTER meet UK building regulations?
Yes. All OYSTERS conform to and in many cases exceed many of the elements of UK Building Regulations.
Can I change the position of the windows & glazed panels?
Yes. Due to the panel's construction technique, most panels are interchangable, thereby enabling you to select their final position and makeup.
Can I specify a 'serviced shell' option?
Yes. If you would prefer to undertake the interior fit-out and installation of other M & E fittings OYSTER can construct a serviced shell which is finished externally and allows you to complete the interiors on your own.
I would like to find out more, what do I do?
Contact us and we will arrange to telephone you to discuss your initial plans. We can then, if appropriate arrange a no obligation visit to meet with you and gather more detailed information relating to your proposed project.
What is an OYSTER constructed of?
OYSTERS are constructed using factory manufactured closed panel wall and cassette floor systems. This is a very efficient method of manufacturing timber buildings as the majority of the assembly process is undertaken in factory conditions. This style of manufacturing is commonly used by German and Scandinavian house builders. Individual panels arrive on site already pre-built with the insulation, breather membranes, battens and most of the services already preinstalled. A typical OYSTER kit can be erected in 2/3 days.
What uValues are OYSTERS manufactured to?
uValues will vary dependent upon the final design and materials specified, however as a general guide OYSTERS are manufactured to meet the following criteria:
Floors.................. 0.13 uV
Walls................... 0.18 uV
Roof.................... 0.13 uV
Windows (CPU)....1.2 uV
Windows (CPU)....1.1 uV
External doors...... 1.7 uV
Enhanced uValues can be achieved by altering the specifications - call us for more information.
How long does it typically take to build an OYSTER?
Assuming foundations and services are pre-installed, approximately 3/4 weeks for an OL40 and 5/7 weeks for an OL80/100.
What is an OYSTER made from?
Every OYSTER is made from FSC/PEFC approved timber. The majority of the timber used in construction is UK sourced. There is no structural or non-structural steelwork in any part of an OYSTER, excepting fixing brackets, etc.
Does OYSTER offer a bespoke design service for other buildings?
Yes, following receipt of a design brief we can prepare sketches, plans, 3D visualisations and indicative costings for you. As this is an individual design service, fees will apply. Please contact us for more information.
Do I need planning permission?
Yes. We can assist you through all of the planning application process and support you with our detailed product knowledge at any pre-planning meetings you may attend. OYSTER can also recommend planning consultants who are familiar with our buildings and can assist you with any apllications.
How do planners view OYSTERS?
OYSTERS have been designed to take into account National Planning Guidelines. Due to their low impact and strong environmental credentials they should be received positively by planners. Planning approval has already been granted on the first application for one of our prospective sites.
Where are OYSTERS manufactured?
They are manufactured entirely in the UK and are not imported kits.
Can I build an OYSTER outside the UK?
Yes. We are already processing enquiries for overseas installations.
What heating and hot water systems are fitted?
Due to the high levels of insulation and the typically remote positions of OYSTERS, high efficiency gas heating/hot water systems are specified as standard. This can be upgraded to utilise any form of renewable energy source. For futher information please contact us. Energy calculations (EPCs) are available upon request.
